# Quickstart

This guide walks you through registering your first `.ely` name with Elysium Names.

A `.ely` name gives your wallet a human-readable identity on the Elysium network. Once registered, your name is represented by an ERC-721 NFT that you can manage, transfer and renew.

## Before you begin

Make sure you have the following:

* **An EVM-compatible wallet:** A wallet that supports connecting to the Elysium network.
* **HYPE:** The required token for registration payments and network gas fees.
* **A name in mind:** Choose the `.ely` name you want to register.
* **Access to the application:** Visit [elysiumnameservice.xyz](http://elysiumnameservice.xyz).

## Step 1: Connect your wallet

Visit the [Elysium Names application](https://elysiumnameservice.xyz/) and connect your wallet.

Make sure your wallet is connected to the correct Elysium network and that you have sufficient HYPE to cover the registration cost and transaction fees.

Your connected wallet will normally be the wallet paying for the registration. However, the wallet paying for a name does not have to be the wallet that receives ownership of it.

## Step 2: Choose your name

Enter the name you want to register and check its availability.

Names must follow the protocol's naming rules:

* Names must contain between 1 and 63 characters.
* Only lowercase letters (`a–z`), numbers (`0–9`) and hyphens (`-`) are permitted.
* Names cannot begin or end with a hyphen.
* The name must not already be registered or reserved.

For example, `yourname`is a valid label and becomes `yourname.ely` when displayed as a complete name.

Some names, including protocol-designated brand names and single-character names, are reserved and cannot be registered through the ordinary public registration process.

## Step 3: Select your registration period

Choose how long you want to register the name.

Registration periods range from **1 to 10 years**. The total cost depends on the name's length, registration duration and any eligible discount.

The application displays the applicable registration cost before you confirm the transaction.

Make sure you review the amount and selected registration period before proceeding.

## Step 4: Complete the commitment process

Elysium Names uses a commit-reveal registration process.

This process helps protect registrations by preventing the name and its intended owner from being exposed in advance.

The process involves two stages:

1. **Commit:** Submit a commitment for the name registration. The commitment is associated with the intended receiving wallet.
2. **Register:** After the commitment has matured, submit the registration transaction to complete the purchase.

A commitment must be at least **15 seconds old** before it can be used, and it expires after **24 hours**.

Follow the application's instructions and wait until the commitment is eligible before completing registration.

## Step 5: Confirm registration

Once the registration transaction is successfully processed, the name is registered and its ERC-721 NFT is assigned to the designated owner wallet.

The wallet that submitted the payment and the wallet that receives the name can be different.

For example:

* Wallet A submits the registration payment.
* Wallet B is specified as the receiving owner.
* Once registration succeeds, Wallet B owns the `.ely` NFT.

This allows users to register names for themselves or for another wallet.

## Step 6: Manage your new name

After successful registration, you can manage your name through the Elysium Names application.

Depending on the available functionality, name management includes:

* Updating the wallet address associated with your name.
* Adding or updating text records.
* Setting your primary `.ely` name.
* Appointing a manager to help maintain your records.
* Transferring ownership to another wallet.

Your name is an NFT, so ownership is controlled by the wallet that holds the NFT.

## Important things to know

**Registration is time-limited**

A name is registered for the period you select. You must renew it to maintain ownership beyond its expiry date.

**Names can be renewed by another wallet**

The wallet paying for a renewal does not have to be the wallet that owns the name. Anyone can renew an existing name, subject to the protocol's renewal rules.

**Keep your wallet secure**

Your wallet controls ownership of your `.ely` NFT. Never share your seed phrase or private keys with anyone.

**Registration does not guarantee universal resolution**

Applications, wallets and marketplaces must integrate `.ely` resolution before they can recognise and use your name natively.

## What's next?

After registering your name, explore the rest of the documentation to understand how ownership, records, renewals, referrals and partner programmes work.

* **Registration & Pricing:** Understand registration costs, discounts and payment rules.
* **Name Ownership & Management:** Learn how to manage records, appoint managers and transfer names.
* **Renewals & Expiry:** Understand registration periods, grace periods and expiry rules.
* **Developer Documentation:** Learn how applications can integrate `.ely` resolution.
