Every successfully registered .ely name is represented by an ERC-721 NFT. The wallet holding this NFT is recognised as the name owner and has control over the name’s management and associated records. Elysium Names gives owners the ability to manage their onchain identity, assign trusted managers, update records, set a primary name and transfer ownership. This page explains the ownership structure and the management permissions available to name holders.

1. Understanding name ownership

When a .ely name is successfully registered, an ERC-721 NFT is minted to the designated receiving wallet. The NFT represents ownership of the registered name. For example, when yourname.ely is registered, the wallet receiving the NFT becomes its owner. Ownership is controlled by the wallet holding the NFT, not necessarily the wallet that originally paid for registration. This distinction allows one wallet to register a name for another wallet.

2. What can a name owner do?

The owner of a registered .ely name has access to the following management capabilities:
  • Update the wallet address associated with the name.
  • Add, update or remove text records.
  • Set or clear a primary name.
  • Appoint or remove a manager.
  • Transfer the name NFT to another wallet.
These permissions allow owners to maintain their identity information while retaining control over the underlying NFT.

3. Address records

An address record connects a .ely name to a wallet address. For example, yourname.ely can resolve to an EVM wallet address, allowing supported applications to retrieve the associated address instead of requiring users to share a long hexadecimal address. The owner can update the address record when they want the name to point to a different wallet. Address records are separate from NFT ownership. Changing the address associated with a name does not transfer ownership of the NFT.

4. Text records

Text records allow owners to associate additional information with their names. These records can store supported key-value information, making .ely useful beyond basic wallet resolution. The owner can add, update or remove text records through the name management functionality. Applications integrating with Elysium Names can retrieve supported text records using the protocol’s read functions.

5. Primary names

A primary name allows a wallet to designate a .ely name as its preferred onchain identity. For example, a wallet that owns yourname.ely can set it as its primary name. The protocol provides a primary-name lookup function that allows applications to retrieve the full .ely name associated with a wallet. A wallet can clear its primary name when it no longer wants to use that designation. Setting a primary name does not change NFT ownership or registration expiry.

6. Name managers

Elysium Names supports a manager system that allows an owner to delegate limited management permissions to another wallet. A manager can help maintain a name’s records without receiving ownership of the NFT.

What can a manager do?

An appointed manager can:
  • Update the name’s address record.
  • Add, update or remove text records.

What can a manager not do?

A manager cannot:
  • Transfer ownership of the name NFT.
  • Appoint another manager.
  • Set or clear the owner’s primary name.
These restrictions allow owners to delegate routine record management while retaining control over important ownership decisions.

Appointing or removing a manager

The NFT owner can appoint a manager through the name management functionality. The owner can also remove the appointed manager whenever necessary. Manager permissions do not replace or override the owner’s ownership rights.

7. Transferring name ownership

Because each registered .ely name is an ERC-721 NFT, ownership can be transferred to another wallet through the supported NFT transfer mechanism. A transfer changes the wallet recognised as the name owner. However, transferring a name does not restart its registration period or extend its expiry date. The existing expiry date remains unchanged.

What happens to records during a transfer?

To protect the new owner’s identity and prevent the previous owner’s information from carrying over:
  • The address record is reset to the new owner’s wallet address.
  • Existing text records are reset.
  • The previously appointed manager is cleared.
  • The new owner gains control of the name’s management.
The new owner can then configure the address and text records and appoint a new manager if desired.

8. Ownership and registration expiry

Owning a .ely NFT does not mean the name is registered permanently. Each name has a registration expiry date determined by its registration period and subsequent renewals. If a name expires, its owner must follow the protocol’s renewal rules to retain it. See Renewals & Expiry for details about renewal periods, grace periods and expired-name availability.

9. Important ownership rules

  • The wallet holding the ERC-721 NFT is the name owner.
  • The registration payer and NFT owner can be different wallets.
  • Updating an address record does not transfer NFT ownership.
  • Appointing a manager does not transfer ownership.
  • Managers have limited record-management permissions.
  • Only the owner can transfer the NFT or appoint a manager.
  • Transferring a name does not reset its expiry date.
  • Address and text records are reset when ownership changes.
  • The previous manager is cleared during a transfer.

10. Frequently asked questions

Does changing my wallet address transfer ownership of my name? No. Updating the address record changes where the name resolves, not who owns the NFT. Can I give someone permission to manage my name without transferring it? Yes. You can appoint a manager who can update address and text records without gaining ownership. Can my manager transfer my name to another wallet? No. NFT transfers remain under the owner’s control. Can I transfer my .ely name to another wallet? Yes. A registered name is an ERC-721 NFT and can be transferred through the supported transfer mechanism. Does transferring a name give the new owner a fresh registration period? No. The existing expiry date remains unchanged. What happens to my records when I transfer my name? The address and text records are reset, and the existing manager is cleared.
