Every .ely name is registered for a fixed period. To maintain ownership beyond that period, the name must be renewed before its registration expires or during the applicable grace period. Elysium Names supports renewals by the current owner and by other wallets, subject to the protocol’s renewal rules. This page explains renewal periods, expiry, the grace period and the expired-name premium.

1. Registration expiry

Every registered name has an expiry date determined by its original registration period and any subsequent renewals. The expiry date is recorded by the protocol and can be retrieved through the smart contracts. Owners should monitor their name’s expiry date and renew early to avoid losing access to it. A name does not become permanently owned simply because its NFT was successfully registered. Continued registration depends on renewal within the permitted period.

2. Renewing a name

Users can renew a registered name to extend its registration period. Renewal periods range from 30 days to 10 years. The renewal payment is calculated using the applicable standard registration price and the selected renewal duration. Unlike initial registration, renewal does not require a commit-reveal process.

Who can renew a name?

Anyone can renew an existing .ely name. The wallet submitting the renewal payment does not have to be the wallet holding the name NFT. For example:
  • Wallet A owns yourname.ely.
  • Wallet B submits the renewal payment.
  • The registration period for yourname.ely is extended.
  • Wallet A remains the NFT owner.
Renewing a name does not transfer ownership or change its associated wallet records.

3. Renewal pricing and discounts

Renewals use the normal applicable registration price. The following rules apply:
  • Renewals are charged at the standard name price.
  • Registration discounts do not apply.
  • Referral discounts do not apply.
  • Renewals do not generate referral rewards.
  • The wallet paying for renewal can be different from the name owner.
If a name is already expired, an additional premium may apply depending on when the renewal is attempted.

4. What happens when a name expires?

When a name reaches its expiry date without being renewed, it enters a 30-day grace period. During this period:
  • The existing owner retains the exclusive right to renew the name.
  • Other wallets cannot register the name.
  • The name is not immediately made available to the public.
The grace period gives the existing owner an opportunity to recover the registration without another user taking the name.

5. The 30-day grace period

During the 30-day grace period, only the current owner can renew the expired name. This means another wallet cannot renew it on the owner’s behalf during this period. Owners should renew as soon as possible rather than relying on the grace period. Once the grace period ends, the name can become available for registration by other users, subject to the protocol’s expired-name premium rules.

6. Expired-name premium

After the grace period, an expired name becomes available for re-registration with an additional premium.
